Death Odor Removal in Las Vegas Homes
The crew finds what's holding the odor and takes it out before treating anything. Ask for a warm-day check in the scope.
If the room's been cleaned and the smell is still there, something porous still holds the source.
Las Vegas Bio Clean arranges decomposition odor removal for homes and apartments in Las Vegas, Henderson and across Clark County. If a carpet shampoo, a store-bought fogger or a week of open windows has already been tried and the smell came back on a warm afternoon, say so when you call.
The smell is hundreds of compounds
Researchers have identified a long list of volatile compounds from decomposition. A 2023 review in Frontiers in Microbiology points to sulfur compounds such as dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, and to indole and skatole, which come from protein breakdown. Cadaverine and putrescine get the blame in most articles, but the same review notes they aren't volatile and some studies didn't detect them in the air.
Odor follows fluid, then settles in anything soft
Fluid soaks down and out, carrying the source with it, while gases from that fluid settle into soft materials that were never touched. In one forensic study, carpet squares held near a recently dead body for two to ten minutes, with no contact at all, still drew alerts from cadaver dogs for weeks. A dog's nose is far better than yours, but it shows how readily carpet takes up scent.
Where the crew looks
- Carpet pad and the subfloor or slab under it
- The bottom of the drywall and the back of the baseboard
- Mattresses, sofas, curtains and clothes in the closet
- Return air vents, the filter, and the ducts if the air handler ran
- Unsealed wood, including floorboards and cabinet backs
Nothing here is a chemical trick. Any soft thing that holds the source comes out, and any surface that stays gets disinfected and, if the walk-through calls for it, sealed. Unattended death cleanup covers that removal stage in detail.
Ozone and air fresheners leave the source in place
| Common fix | What it does | What it leaves behind |
|---|---|---|
| Air fresheners, candles | Add a stronger smell over the top | Remove nothing, and university extension guidance on smoke odor warns the same about masking sprays |
| Carpet shampoo or steam | Cleans the top of the pile | OSHA says carpet can't be routinely decontaminated, and wetting it can move fluid around |
| Ozone generators | React with some odor chemicals in the air | EPA: "may have no effect on biological contaminants embedded in porous material," is not effective on many odor chemicals, and can form irritating by-products |
| Hydroxyl machines and thermal fogging | Treat air and surfaces after removal | We found no good study on death odor, so treat them as a finishing step at most |
Ozone does have a narrow use. High concentrations are sometimes run in an empty, sealed space after the source is gone. Nobody and no pet can be inside, and it can damage rubber, wiring and fabric. If it's on your scope, ask how long the house stays empty and how it gets aired out.
Ducts are a separate line on the scope
If the air handler ran after the death, odor can reach every room it serves. Las Vegas makes this likelier, because cooling runs for months and the system pulls air constantly. Tell us on the call whether it's running, and we'll say what to do with it. Don't stay in a house without cooling in the heat.
Sheet metal ducts can be cleaned. Fiberglass duct board and lined ducts are harder, and EPA says no chemical biocides are registered for internally insulated duct systems, so a contaminated section is usually better replaced. The filter goes either way. In a shared building, one system may serve several units, which is what the page on neighbor's units deals with.
